Partying for Refugee Week
Sometimes everyone just needs a massive party in the sun. So that’s what we did for Refugee Week…
Garden discos, olympic games (let’s just say these were beyond competitive and we were shocked by the cheating), incredibly delicious falafel from Bison Bites and homemade cakes by our community who baked, tombola with prizes, circus for kids, poetry games led by our book group, beauty parlour for facials and massages by Marion Couffon and our volunteer Omar Othman, ice cream on a bike by George Williams, plant giveaways from volunteer Betul Piyade, face painting by our art team Susan, Pari and Fazilia, pinning the tail on the Boris, chess with our 8 year old Ukrainian chess champion vs lots of our Iranian friends…

It was beautiful to see our community laughing till they cried with friends old and new and forgetting all of their heavy stuff for a while – whether that be past trauma or the weight of Home Office bureaucracy or surviving on next to no money.

Dancing under our tree, Palestinians shimmied with El Salvadorians, Colombians, Ukrainians, Nigerians, Syrians, Eritreans, and all our other friends from more than fifty different countries. Love triumphs over borders and we are so lucky to have a community in which friendships are so warm and wonderful.
